Life changing decision kick starts a rewarding career

Finding a job you love is the holy grail of life hacks.

Some people never know how sweet the feeling is, instead toiling away for years in unrewarding or uninspiring roles.

For Moda Ali, the breakthrough was a simple invitation from a friend.

“I’ve found where I’m supposed to be,” Moda says of her decision to join her friend, Yasmin, studying for a Certificate III in Individual Support, focusing on ageing and disability.

“Being able to do something positive for someone makes me happy and encourages me to do more.”

“This job is about humanity – it’s part of us,” she says.

Now Moda and Yasmin are studying the more advanced Certificate IV in Disability together. They’re often in the library late at night, discussing what they’ve learned and supporting each other with the coursework.

During her studies, Moda has learned as much from her teachers and classmates than she has from studies.

“I’m really proud of myself that I’m providing help to someone. I get to meet new people and I learn from them – they become special to me”.

“I’ve not only learnt about disability and aged care, I’ve also learnt a lot about people. I’ve really enjoyed the new faces and new friends”.

“The highlight of the course was the experiences and knowledge – I was learning new things from the beginning to the end”.

Moda’s training included a placement at Footscray community service provider annecto, allowing her to apply her new skills in a practical setting.

“Getting to know the clients became my favourite activity,” Moda says.

“I was nervous at first, but every day I learnt more about people, and how to take care of them and make them happy”.

The experience at annecto also helped Moda land a job, and she has no plans to looking back.

“I really enjoy disability care. Every day you learn new things and meet different people”.

“I’m really proud of myself that I’m providing help to someone. I get to meet new people and I learn from them – they become special to me”.

So what’s next for Moda?

“At some point, I would like to study nursing – that is my goal.”

“And Cert III and IV are a great pathway towards that!”
